Why Are My New Crowns and Veneers Affecting My Speech?

Posted on November 15, 2024 by AllSmiles.

My dentist placed two crowns and ten porcelain veneers in late August. I had three sets of temporaries, and the final set looked and felt perfect. I’ve had permanent crowns and veneers since mid-September, and they disrupt my speech. My tongue feels too big for my arch and rests behind my lower front teeth. It feels so awkward.

My dentist can’t determine what’s happening with the crowns or veneers. Could the premolar crowns be the problem? – Thanks! Lou Anne from SC

Lou Anne,

We understand your concern about the impact of your dental treatment on your tongue and speech. An advanced cosmetic dentist would need to examine and x-ray your teeth to identify the cause of your discomfort.

Dental crowns

Dental crowns should fit and function confortabley

While properly placed porcelain veneers don’t interfere with speech or chewing, you may have received porcelain crowns instead. Crowns, which cover the entire tooth, can potentially affect speech patterns.

Experienced cosmetic dentists are skilled in creating restorations that minimize speech disturbances. They carefully consider tooth contour, thickness, and position to ensure a natural and comfortable result. Ideally, temporary restorations assess fit, function, and speech before proceeding with permanent restorations.

It’s concerning that your permanent crowns caused issues after a satisfactory experience with the temporaries. This suggests a potential discrepancy in the fabrication or placement process. It’s possible that the dental laboratory may not have accurately replicated the temporary restorations, or the dentist may not have properly positioned the permanent crowns.

While many patients adapt to new dental restorations over time, a dentist must address persistent speech difficulties. If the problem persists and your dentist can’t resolve it, we recommend seeking a second opinion.

My Dental Bonding Is Peeling Off After Two Months

Posted on October 22, 2024 by AllSmiles.

After my dentist’s four attempts to hide fluorosis stains on my teeth, the bonding is still the wrong color. I’ve had so many bonding attempts that the most recent bonding that my dentist did in August is starting to peel.  My dentist wants to try again, but I am afraid that all the etching of my teeth is going to ruin the enamel. Then, I will have spotted teeth with little enamel left. Is it time to switch dentists? Is it unrealistic to think the fluorosis stains will improve? Thanks, Jasyn

Jasyn,

Your current dental situation, characterized by poorly executed dental bonding and fluorosis, requires careful consideration and appropriate treatment.

What Is Fluorosis?

Fluorosis is a condition resulting from excessive fluoride exposure during tooth development. Mild fluorosis causes subtle white spots on the teeth, while severe cases may involve brown discoloration and pitting.

The Failed Bonding Procedure

The inadequate bonding procedure you’ve experienced indicates subpar dental work. The fact that the bonding fell off suggests you need a second opinion from a skilled cosmetic dentist.

Addressing Fluorosis and Achieving Optimal Results

Dental bonding by Steven Brooksher, DDS

A skilled cosmetic dentist can use dental bonding techniques to treat fluorosis and restore teeth. The dentist must remove the discolored enamel and apply composite resin material that mimics the appearance of natural teeth. By carefully selecting and layering the composite, the dentist can achieve natural-looking results

A successful bonding procedure relies on proper etching and bonding techniques. Etching the enamel creates a microscopically rough surface that allows the bonding agent to adhere to your teeth. In cases of severe fluorosis, longer etching time may be needed. The bonding agent, when cured, forms a strong bond with the tooth structure, ensuring the longevity of the restoration.

Given the complexities of your case, we recommend consulting an experienced cosmetic dentist to address the aesthetic and functional aspects of your dental needs.

How Can I Get Rid of My Jagged Teeth Edges After Braces?

Posted on March 31, 2024 by AllSmiles.

In June, I should be finished with braces. I had jagged teeth edges before braces, and now that all my teeth are even, the edges are more noticeable. I want to smooth out the edges as soon as possible after my braces are off. Is this something my orthodontist can do, or should I ask my family dentist? I do not want to mention it to either of them yet, so I wrote your office for independent advice. Thank you. Marcus

Marcus,

Thank you for sending your inquiry to our office. We recommend that you schedule an appointment with an advanced cosmetic dentist to smooth your jagged tooth edges. The procedure is called enameloplasty.

What Is Enameloplasty?

Enameloplasty is a dental procedure that removes small amounts of tooth enamel to reshape a tooth. The process is also called cosmetic contouring or tooth contouring. Enameloplasty can smooth your jagged tooth edges.

When Is Enameloplasty Used?

Emanemloplasty conceals minor imperfections in teeth. It is less expensive than treatment with dental bonding or porcelain veneers. But it can be used along with those cosmetic dentistry treatments. In some cases, after braces, composite bonding might be used to fill in and shape your teeth.

Enameloplasty improves these flaws:

  • Chips
  • Fractures
  • Jagged edges
  • Length
  • Misalignment
  • Pointy teeth
  • Slight overlap

When tooth length is affected

If enameloplasty will change your tooth length, smoothing the edges can be challenging. It can also change your bite. Experienced cosmetic dentists know how to smooth tooth edges without disrupting your bite.

In the example below, a dentist shaped a patient’s tooth edges. And composite bonding finished the side of the teeth.

Choosing a Doctor to Smooth Jagged Edges

Which doctor should you choose to soften a jagged tooth—your orthodontist or family dentist? If your teeth only need minor shaping with dental bonding, your family dentist or orthodontist should be able to complete it. But if more is involved, we recommend an advanced cosmetic dentist.
