Will I Need an Implant If a Tooth Post Broke?

Posted on April 15, 2026 by AllSmiles.

I have a tooth post that broke at the gumline, and the tooth is part of a dental bridge. Will I lose the bridge and the tooth? Thanks. Calvin from MI

Calvin,

You’re facing several complex issues. If a tooth post breaks off at the gumline, the dentist has nothing to grasp, limiting removal options. In some situations, an ultrasonic instrument can loosen the cement enough to twist the post out, but your case presents added difficulty.

To grip the post, the dentist would need to drill away surrounding tooth structure. Since this involves a small right lateral incisor, removing more teeth would leave very little structure to securely hold a new post. That would create a weaker long-term result.

What Complicates Treatment?

Accessing the post would require cutting the crown off the bridge. Once that step occurs, replacing the entire bridge is usually necessary. One drawback of dental bridges is that when a supporting tooth fails, the entire bridge often needs to be replaced.

Considering Long-Term Stability for Your Front Teeth

A dental implant mimics a natural tooth and does not need support from other teeth

Even if a new post could be placed, there is little reason to expect it to last longer than the previous one. Strong lateral biting forces on the front teeth often lead to repeated fractures and dental work.

When dentists evaluate long-term stability, they usually compare the realistic treatment paths available. Based on typical outcomes in similar cases, the main options include:

  • Two dental implants—one for the missing tooth and one replacing the broken tooth
  • A longer four-unit bridge spanning from the right canine to the left central incisor.

A longer bridge can work in some situations, but it also transfers additional stress to the supporting teeth. Given a pattern of breakage, that option may be riskier. While we would defer to a dentist who has seen you in person, implants often provide the most stable long-term solution in cases like this.
