Dental Implants and Methadone: How Sedation Can Be Planned Safely

Posted on July 31, 2026 by AllSmiles.

My dental implant surgery is scheduled for later this month, and I’m unsure whether I should tell the implant team that I’m taking methadone.

They appeared concerned when I mentioned I had previously taken Suboxone, so I’m worried they may not want to move forward if they know I’m on methadone now. However, I also realize my medication could be important for my care and safety during surgery. Should I tell them before the procedure? – Thanks. Karter from IL

Karter,

A patient should always provide a complete medication history, and methadone is particularly important to discuss before dental implant surgery.

Methadone can affect how sedative medications work. To provide comfortable and safe care, the dentist or oral surgeon may need to adjust the dosage, choose different medications, or customize the sedation plan based on the your medical history and current treatment.

What If a Practice Seems Unwilling to Adjust the Sedation Plan?

A reluctance to individualize treatment may be a reason to ask more questions or seek another opinion. Every patient has unique medical needs. If a practice appears to rely on the same approach for everyone without discussing how methadone could affect sedation, it is reasonable for you to ask how the treatment plan will be adapted to provide safe, comfortable care.

Why Is Proper Sedation So Important?

Proper sedation is more than comfort—it also helps reduce physical stress during treatment. Significant stress during a dental procedure can contribute to serious medical emergencies in susceptible patients, including heart attack, stroke, or seizures. A sedation plan that adequately manages anxiety and discomfort can help lower those risks while making the procedure easier for the patient.

When Is It Worth Seeking a Second Opinion?

If you are unsure whether the proposed sedation plan meets your needs, seeking a second opinion is often worthwhile. When meeting with another qualified dentist or oral surgeon who performs dental implant surgery, you may want to discuss the following:

  • Whether the provider has experience treating patients taking methadone.
  • How the sedation plan will be tailored to your medications and medical history.
  • What steps will be taken to maximize comfort and safety during the procedure.
  • Whether additional monitoring or precautions are recommended.

Many private practices take an individualized approach to treatment, although excellent patient-centered care can also be found in other practice settings. The most important factor is finding a dentist or surgeon who is willing to carefully evaluate your specific needs rather than relying on a one-size-fits-all approach.
