My dentist prepared my upper arch for four crowns on molar teeth and veneers for the rest of my upper teeth. I’m wearing temporary crowns and veneers that look natural. However, I’ve had jaw pain since getting them. Although my dentist recommended Advil, I can’t tolerate the discomfort without it. My cheeks feel numb toward the back where the temporary crowns are. Is this an adjustment period, or should I ask an interim dentist to check my bite? My dentist is on extended vacation through mid-January. Thanks. Ishmael from MI
Ishmael,

Before-and-after dental crowns for one of Dr. Brooksher’s patients
Your discomfort is common for an extensive dental procedure, especially full-mouth reconstruction of the upper arch with dental crowns and veneers. These procedures can be highly invasive, often requiring significant tissue manipulation and prolonged mouth opening, both of which can lead to post-operative pain and discomfort. Your discomfort is likely a result of the significant trauma to the tissues involved in the procedure.
We recommend the following
- Pain management: Take over-the-counter pain relievers such as ibuprofen as directed.
- Local applications: Apply warm compresses to the affected area for relief.
- Rest and relaxation: Minimize jaw movement and rest to promote tissue healing.
Given your dentist’s absence, if your discomfort persists or worsens, we suggest contacting the office to see another dentist who can access your records, evaluate your bite, and provide appropriate management.
