I get a migraine before dental appointments

Posted on October 31, 2021 by AllSmiles.

Before every dental appointment, I get a migraine headache. I know this is anxiety, but I can’t stop myself from getting headaches. Of course, I can’t drive myself to the dentist either when I have a migraine. This has been going on for 2 years, during which I have only seen a dentist once.  Last week, I saw a dentist for an urgent appointment because my denture broke. The dentist warned me to fix it promptly to avoid an emergency. My anxiety level is over the top, and I cannot think clearly enough to know if I can trust this dentist for a new implant denture or if I need to look elsewhere. Where do I start? Thank you. Aaron from Chicago

Aaron – We suggest that you find a dentist who caters to anxious patients. Find two or three dentists with whom you can schedule a consultation. But ensure the dentists are also skilled with dental implants.

Schedule the consultations without mentioning the kind of dental treatment you need. Explain your anxiety and listen to and watch how each dentist responds to determine which one might be best for your needs.

Affordable dental implants will secure your dentures

Ask each dentist what they do to help patients relax. If sedation dentistry is available, find out what levels of sedation the dentists offer and what you can expect from each level. If oral conscious sedation is an option, you will be able to take a small amount of anti-anxiety medication before your appointment.

Tell the dentist about your migraines. Depending on the sedation type, you may need to arrange transportation to and from your appointments.  And when you receive implant dentures, you can expect to be sedated for the surgery.

There are ways to help you maintain good oral health and to get the dental care you need. Finding the right dentist to meet your needs will get you back on track.

Tooth fillings near my gumline keep popping out

Posted on October 26, 2021 by AllSmiles.

Woman covering her mouth, perhaps due to tooth fillings popping outOver the years, I’ve had problems with notching at my gumline, and my dentist covered them with bonding to prevent any more cavities. The issue affected five teeth. That was 15 years ago.

Last summer, my new dentist replaced the bonding because it was old and discolored. Since that time, the fillings on three of the five teeth popped out twice. I have slight anxiety over dental appointments, but this episode is making me nervous. I asked my dentist to find a permanent solution because the fillings popping out is increasing stress.

I have an autistic child and a stressful job, so I do not need repeated dental visits. My dentist seemed unphased by my concern and said he could use sedation whenever I needed new fillings. He doesn’t get it. Why are the fillings popping out? Also, I’ve never had sedation. Is it safe enough for me to keep getting it whenever I need new fillings? – Thank you. Katia from GA

Katia,

Thank you for your questions.

What Causes Notches on Teeth at the Gumline?

Clenching and grinding put pressure on your teeth and cause them to flex. Research shows that clenching or grinding your teeth causes notches on then near your gumline. The notches are called abfraction lesions.

How Can You Prevent Fillings from Popping Out?

Your dentist can prevent fillings near the gumline from popping out by using flexible dental composite. Silux Plus and Renamel are two brands of flexible composite. They will blend with your teeth and stay in place for years if your dentist properly bonds them. Newer dental composites are often hybrids that do not stay in long. And your dentist might be using a newer composite.

How Safe Is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry is safe enough to use on every dental visit. Relaxing at the dental office might require the lowest level of sedation—nitrous oxide, or laughing gas. Otherwise, your dentist might prescribe an anti-anxiety for you to take before your appointment. In the United States, training requirements for dentists to administer sedation vary in each state. According to the American Dental Association, millions of dentists safely treat dental anxiety each year.

But in your case, the issue is using a dental bonding that will stay in your teeth and not pop out. If your dentist lacks the tools or materials to keep your fillings in place, we recommend that you schedule an appointment with an advanced cosmetic dentist.

We hope the information will help you make an informed decision about what to do next.

Are Dental Implants Permanent?

Posted on October 12, 2021 by AllSmiles.

Dental implants outlast a bridge or a partial denture. But how long can you expect your implants to last? Are dental implants permanent? We will explain whether implants are permanent, which parts you must replace, and how you can preserve your implants.

Are Dental Implants Permanent?

Engineers designed dental implants to be a permanent form of tooth replacement—lasting a lifetime. The article, What Is the Success Rate of Dental Implants?, published by the American Academy of Implant Dentistry, confirms that dental implants can last many decades if you take care of them. However, the permanency of dental implants refers to the screw or artificial tooth root. The prosthesis, or artificial teeth, attached to implants will require replacing over the years.

What Are the Parts of a Dental Implant?

Dental implant components, including root form, abutment, and crown

Dental implants imitate natural teeth

Dental implants are artificial tooth roots. Your implant dentist will attach a connector (abutment) to each implant fixture. And after three to four months of healing, your dentist will attach artificial teeth to the abutments. Meanwhile, you can wear temporary replacement teeth.

Types of artificial teeth, also called prostheses or restorations, include:

  • Crowns
  • Bridges
  • Dentures

What Is the Lifespan of a Dental Implant Restoration?

Dental implant crowns, bridges, and dentures can last longer than restorations not attached to implants. Estimates for their lifespan are below:

  • Implant crown – An implant crown can last up to fifteen years if you take care of it. Gold crowns are sturdy and last longer than ceramic crowns.
  • Implant bridge – An implant bridge can last up to twenty years before you need to replace it.
  • Implant denture – A well-made implant denture can last ten years or longer.

What Can You Do to Help Your Dental Implants Last?

Your dental implants can be permanent if you take precautions. Your choice of an implant dentist and diligent home care make a difference.

Below are five tips, including several recommendations from the American Academy of Implant Dentistry for protecting your implants:

  1. Choose an implant dentist or surgeon who uses 3-D x-rays for planning implant placement
  2. Avoid tobacco use because it hinders healing
  3. Avoid alcohol
  4. Practice good oral hygiene
  5. Maintain good overall health

Summary

The artificial root of a dental implant can last a lifetime. But you will need to replace the dental crown, bridge, or denture attached to the implants over the years. Select your implant surgeon wisely. And take good care of your implants to help them be a permanent form of tooth replacement.
