Will You Need Invisalign Buttons?

Posted on August 23, 2019 by AllSmiles.

Many people who look forward to straightening their teeth with Invisalign are disappointed when they learn that attachments might be needed to maximize their treatment. You likely several questions, including:

  • What are these attachments?
  • Will you need them?
  • If so, will your Invisalign trays still be invisible?
  • Can you opt not to receive them?

What Are Invisalign Attachments?

Invisalign attachments are made of tooth-colored dental composite. Your dentist will temporarily bond them to the teeth that require complex movement. Although the attachments are small, the number that your dentist will place, as well as their shape, size, and location can vary based on the movement required for each tooth.

Your aligners might also require buttons, or small brackets, to which elastics are attached. Your dentist will use buttons or attachments to achieve movement that aligners alone are unable to complete.

When Are Attachments Needed?

Although each case is different, some common issues that require Invisalign attachments include:

  • Severe rotation
  • Open bite
  • Short teeth

The attachments help your aligners grip your teeth and gently move them to the correct position with the right amount of force.

Are They Noticeable?

Your dentist will use a shade of dental composite that blends with your natural teeth, so they are barely visible. You’ll still enjoy invisible braces that most people won’t notice.

How Are They Secured to Your Teeth?

Your dentist will use a template aligner that has openings in it where the attachments, or buttons, are to be placed.

  • Lightly etch the affected teeth to ensure the bonding adheres to them
  • Place a template aligner on your teeth
  • Fill each opening in the template with dental composite
  • Wait a few minutes while the composite hardens
  • Remove the template and any excess composite

How Will They Feel?

Invisalign aligners will fit more snugly with attachments on your teeth. Although some patients have difficulty removing the aligners, your dentist will show you the most effective to remove them when you eat and floss and brush your teeth.

What If You Decline Invisalign Attachments?

If your dentist includes attachments in your treatment plan, don’t consider them optional. If Invisalign can’t grip your teeth, it won’t move them. Usually, after your dentist puts attachments on your teeth, they remain throughout treatment.

Practice Good Oral Hygiene

Bacteria and plaque can accumulate around the attachments. Remove the aligners when you eat and thoroughly brush around the attachments.

When Will You Know?

After an examination and a 3-D scan of your teeth, your dentist will provide you with a treatment plan. He or she will let you know if attachments, buttons, or elastics are needed to assist in aligning your teeth. As your dentist checks the progress of your treatment, he or she might adjust it. Although attachments were not originally in the plan, your dentist might use them to achieve the best results.

4 Clues to Recognizing When Dental Implants Are Too Cheap

Posted on August 14, 2019 by AllSmiles.

The cost of dental implants varies depending on where you live in the country, as well as the fees of the dentist or oral surgeon. On average, a single implant can cost $1500-$3000.

When Are Dental Implants Too Cheap?

Your dental implants might be too cheap if the dentist:

  1. Doesn’t review your health history and just schedules you for implants
  2. Only takes basic x-rays of your teeth without doing a 3-D CT scan
  3. Tells you about steps he or she will skip to make implants more affordable
  4. Has only completed a few implant cases

Where to Start

You can call dental offices or schedule consultations with two or three implant dentists. As you compare and record the costs from each dentist, find out what services are included in the prices you are quoted. Surgery (including bone grafting, if needed), lab fees, the type and quality of implant fixtures, implant crowns, sedation, and other services factor into the total cost.

Getting the Right Perspective on Affordable Dental Implants

If you want to receive quality implants that last, consider looking for a competitive price from a highly skilled implant dentist. Avoid searching for cheap dental implants. Ask to see before-and-after photos of the dentist’s dental implant cases.

A snap-on denture is an affordable option for dental implants

Ask for information on financing, payment plans, and other ways that each dentist makes implants affordable for you. If you need multiple implants, consider having the work done in phases as your budget allows. If all of your teeth are missing, implant overdentures are an affordable way to stabilize your dentures and improve their function.

Details that Matter

Regardless of the cost of your dental implants, ensure your dentist has received advanced, post-graduate training implantology. Successful implant dentists adhere to a strict process for positive outcomes. Your dentist’s process should include the following:

  • Thoroughly reviews your health history to ensure you’re a candidate.
  • Uses 3-D CT scans to accurately capture your oral anatomy and surrounding structures. This ensures accurate implant placement.
  • Uses high-quality implant fixtures.
  • Provides quality dental crowns for the implants. The results will look like your natural teeth.

4 Gummy-Smile Makeover Options that Get Stunning Results

Posted on August 6, 2019 by AllSmiles.

Have your gums taken over your teeth and your smile? A smile makeover can make a life-changing difference that boosts your confidence. But the options for beautifully transforming your smile require the skill and talent of an artistic cosmetic dentist.

Treatment Options for Your Smile Makeover

Gum Contouring

Expert cosmetic dentists use gingivectomy, or a gum lift, to remove excess gum tissue around your teeth. Removing the tissue will make your teeth look longer.

  • No needles or scalpels are involved.
  • Your cosmetic dentist provides painless treatment with a laser that gently removes excess gum tissue.
  • Sometimes additional cosmetic work is needed to lengthen tooth structure and complete your smile makeover.

Porcelain Veneers

Your cosmetic dentist may need to prepare your teeth before giving you a smile makeover with porcelain veneers, by removing a small amount of enamel (0.05 mm or less) from each tooth. Your dentist may also remove some of the bone beneath the gums. He or she will position porcelain veneers over the fronts of your teeth to make them look longer but natural.

Dental Crowns

Dr. Brooksher used gum contouring and dental crowns for this smile makeover.

Depending on your case, your cosmetic dentist might recommend crowns to lengthen your teeth. He or she must taper the entire tooth for a crown to fit over it properly without affecting your bite. Your dentist will explain what you can expect with crowns versus veneers.

Orthodontics

In some cases, your cosmetic dentist will recommend orthodontic treatment to level your teeth and provide a smile makeover that highlights your teeth—not your gums. What can you expect?

  • Your dentist or orthodontist will provide a treatment plan to move your teeth upward, which will also move your gums upward.
  • The vertical position of your teeth will allow your upper lips to hide your gums.
  • Less gum tissue will show when you smile.

Which Option Is Right for You?

You should entrust your smile makeover only to an advanced cosmetic dentist. Look for a nearby accredited cosmetic dentist and schedule a consultation. He or she will examine your teeth and gums and explain your options for saying goodbye to your gummy smile.
